 Funk D`void

Lars Sandberg AKA Funk D’Void, is a DJ and producer who has been involved in the global electronic music scene since the mid-90s. He started Djing at around the tender age of 15, running two under-18 clubs himself – a perfect start to his career. Knowing his vocation to music from an early age after being brought up by his professional pianist mother, Lars never had any doubt as to where his future would lie.

House music changed his life, the early Chicago sound specifically, and hearing the certain sounds during his childhood stirred something inside him; the 808 drum machine used on Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” secured his fascination with these electronic sounds – the turning point over to the Detroit techno sound was almost a spiritual moment as it forged his unique sound that would follow over the coming years – visceral, soulful and without compromise.

After a string of hits over the years (“Jack Me Off”, “Bad Coffee” “Emotional Content”) plus some killer remixes for the likes of Underworld, New Order and Kevin Saunderson, he is probably best known for the end-of-nighter ‘Diabla’ which bridged house and techno (and was played by everyone from Danny Howells to Sven Vath). And if you look carefully you’ll also spy the name ‘L. Sandberg’ in the liner notes of releases by deep house producer Francois Dubois, whose “Blood” and “I Try” were huge underground hits of 2006 and 2007 respectively. Collaborations with such luminaries as Phil Kieran and more recently Sian have produced stellar results – further galvanising his diversity in the techno arena and has led us to the somewhat overdue arrival of his own personal label, Outpost. Much in demand DJ and critically acclaimed producer, his Djing style is everything you expect a true music lover’s taste to be: he is comfortable and adept at moving any dancefloor, the proof being that he is one of the busiest Djs on the circuit today, and has been for the last 15 years. It will be a very special event when FUNK D’VOID performs at THE CUBE for MEME 2013!!

Desert Dwellers

Desert Dwellers are one of the foremost influences in a genre that they basically expanded from the ground up to be where it’s at today. With a blend of a variety of sources that have been composed to form a heavily weaved set of sounds that coincide in perfect harmony together Desert Dwellers has established themselves in not only their home area of Southern California and New Mexico but across the globe.

Taking a new approach on digital production, the main members Amani Friend & Treavor Moontribe have combined the raw sounds of the natural world with skillfully blended deep bass, earthy percussion, etheric voices and culture crossing instrumentation into sonic incense for the mind and body. With this blend of dance tracks and down tempo sounds they have enabled themselves to give a heightened sense of being to listeners through their musical medium.

Bringing the electronic bass music vibe to the yoga scene, and the sounds of yoga to the electronic dance scene, Desert Dwellers’ global sounds are the bridge between worlds. Joining solid groove with sounds of serenity, their signature aesthetic feels as natural on the dance floor as it does after hours or on the mat. Due in no small part to Desert Dwellers’ pioneering spirit, the very concept of chill-out and sacred bass music has expanded dramatically. These sound alchemists offer cutting edge techniques that blend the modern edge of electronica with ancient and organic sounds, offering a spellbinding hybrid with echoes of our tribal past and future. The result has been the prolific production of genre blending dance tracks and downtempo grooves that make for truly memorable listening experiences.

Noah Pred

In what has become an annual tradition for MEME we are once again presenting some quality Canadian label artists as a Thoughtless Music showcase. Noah Pred returns to perform at MEME after playing at The Cube in 2010 for the first edition of the festival. Noah’s return is exciting for a number of reasons including the fact that since he last performed at MEME he moved from Toronto to Berlin to furtherexpand his musical wings both as label boss for Thoughtless Music and as a globe trotting producer and DJ. Noah Pred will be joined by a yet to be named Thoughtless artist that we will announce closer to the festival!

How did you discover electronic music?

I’m going to have to say through DJ RAZ, on oldschool 99.1 fm here in Winnipeg. Also… Not a plug here, but the founders of Symptom Tech really got me IN to the scene.

Who are some of your influences?

Oh Jeez. Daft Punk, & Richie Hawtin actually to keep it short. Plus the classic rock my parents fed me.

Why is a festival like MEME important?

Because this city is basically still a farming town. Leaps and bounds have been made in the last few years to change peoples perception, but quite honestly, there’s still a huge stigma attached to EDM music here. It’s as though people are uncomfortable being tribal and really embracing the rhythm that human beings have been dancing to for thousands of years.

How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn’t heard you perform?

I don’t know yet. Funky, odd… Accessible. It depends on the person. I’ve heard all kinds of things from all kinds of ages.

What else are you currently up to?

Well, last year I did all the Post production audio for an indie film shot here called “Father’s Day“. It was a labour of love. and it was my first time doing that for someone else. I have my hands in too many things to mention right now. Come bring me a drink at the WAG and we’ll have a good chat!
